1 tingCantus Avium & Quarto Tom // Songs of Sorrow & Solace

2 tingA Nostalgic Summer Evening
Opening Concert: A Nostalgic Summer Evening 🌙 We're kicking off the festival with three works that each bring something completely different, but together feel like the perfect start to a summer evening. First up is Haydn's Gypsy Trio: playful, charming, and bursting with dancing rhythms inspired by Hungarian folk music. The kind of music that makes you smile without knowing exactly why. Then something more intimate: Schumann's Fantasy Pieces for clarinet and piano. Three short movements, played without pause, that shift from tender and dreamy to fiery and impulsive. A little bit like Schumann himself, who was famously all over the place, in the best possible way. (There's also a love triangle involving him, Clara, and Brahms, but that's a story for another time 👀) After the break, we end with Arensky's String Quartet No. 2, one of those pieces that deserves so much more attention than it gets. Scored for one violin, one viola and two cellos, the sound is dark, lush and full-bodied. Think a good glass of red wine on a warm summer night with people you love. A Night with a Mad King
A Night with a Mad King 👑 This one is not for the faint-hearted, and we mean that in the best possible way. The evening opens with Sally Beamish's The King's Alchemist, inspired by the true story of John Damian, an eccentric alchemist at the Scottish court who genuinely believed he could fly to France from the top of a castle. It ended exactly as you'd expect. Then comes the main event: Peter Maxwell Davies' Eight Songs for a Mad King, one of the most extraordinary pieces of music theatre ever written. Based on the real words of King George III during his mental breakdown, it follows a king alone on stage, obsessively trying to teach his caged birds to sing. The vocal part spans more than five octaves, shifting from whispers to shrieks to moments of eerie calm. The musicians don't just play, they become part of the drama. It is wild, it is intense, and it will stay with you. This concert is performed without an intermission. Come ready.

2 tingPrague, Paris & Poland
Prague, Paris & Poland 🌸Three composers, three countries, one evening of chamber music with some serious main character energy. We open with Smetana's Piano Trio, a work full of urgency, tenderness and drama. If you know Smetana from The Moldau, this has the same sense of sweep and longing, just much more personal and intense. Then a brief detour to Paris with Poulenc's Flute Sonata: witty, elegant and a little bit cheeky. Exactly what you'd expect from a composer who was once described as having a monk and a street urchin living inside him simultaneously. We close with Bacewicz's Piano Quintet No. 1, a gripping, intense work by one of the most underrated composers of the 20th century. This is the kind of piece we love to bring you: the sort that makes you wonder why you've never heard it before. A Meditative Moment
Come and get your RO PÅ! We wanted to create a concert that focuses on that meditative space—the one where the mind can wander when it enters a state of “flow.” Most people are familiar with this state: the flow we experience when we are deeply focused on work or study, or during exercise, when the mind quiets and it is all about the body moving. Perhaps it is the same flow we feel when spending time with friends or loved ones, where time is literally flying. How liberating and freeing that feeling is! Instead of choosing well-known pieces, the kind you might find on a Spotify playlist titled “Classical Music for Studying” or something similar (no hate), we have delved into the archives to uncover works that are less familiar. These pieces offer a different and more modern perspective on what calm or meditative classical music can be.

2 tingFriends Philharmonic
Voices, rhythms & four grand pianos Festival & Friends is delighted to present the full version of SOUND by Lil Lacy. Lil Lacy is our composer-in-residence for 2025–2026, and during this time, we have gathered reflections and statements from musicians and singers around the world, including those connected to the festival. SOUND utilises these statements and is a sonic celebration of the passion and dedication of musicians everywhere — without you, there would be no music. The work is performed by the vocal ensemble ÆTLA, accompanied by strings and percussion. Stravinsky’s Les Noces(“The Wedding”) combines folk-inspired melodies and irregular rhythms in a way not dissimilar to his seminal Le Sacre du Printemps, but in an altogether more comedic style. The work is scored for an unusual ensemble: four vocal soloists, mixed choir, four pianists (meaning there will be four grand pianos on stage!), and percussion, omitting traditional orchestral instruments such as strings or winds. This sparse, percussive instrumentation creates a sharp, rhythmic energy. The music’s fragmented, repetitive structures, with recurring patterns and dramatic rhythms, give a ceremonial, almost dance-like quality that feels both timeless and modernist. Les Noces can be seen as a musical ritual, where rhythm, text, and voices merge into an intense musical experience. Jazz Compositions Gone Classical
Jazz Compositions Gone Classical 🎷 We love jazz. We always have. And we are so happy that Mathias Heise said yes when we asked him to join us this summer. If you know the Copenhagen jazz scene, you know Mathias. He plays the harmonica like no one else, and in recent years he has been writing for classical ensembles in ways that make the boundary between jazz and classical feel completely irrelevant. This concert presents a whole evening of his compositions, from duos and string quartets to larger chamber ensembles, with Mathias himself performing as well. Our musicians have been looking forward to this one for a long time. And honestly, so have we.

Big Tunes & Afterparty
Final Concert with grand melodies + party!Mozart, Brahms & afterpartyBy age six, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composing and performing for royalty — yet he never let go of his mischievous and humouristic side. Despite his fame, he often struggled financially, spending lavishly and gambling, all while still producing some of the most enduring masterpieces in history. His Clarinet Quintet is a perfect example of his cheekiness paired with elegance. Scored for clarinet, two violins, viola, and cello, it highlights the clarinet’s warm, lyrical voice, blending seamlessly with the strings. Across four movements, Mozart balances elegance, wit, and expressive depth — from the playful Allegro to the voice-like Larghetto. Every note feels perfectly placed, and knowing Mozart’s cheeky personality makes the music sparkle even more.Closing the festival, we present Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F Minor, a Romantic masterpiece completed in 1864. Scored for piano and string quartet, it balances intensity, lyricism, and intricate dialogue between the instruments. Across four movements, the music moves from stormy, dramatic passages to tender, singing melodies, with the piano fully integrated — giving it true main-character energy.Brahms was a perfectionist: he destroyed works he deemed imperfect, including a piano quartet that was only reconstructed decades later. You might not think so, if you have heard Brahms’ compositions, but the composer was shy – often hiding behind a music stand during rehearsals. This work is anything but. After this concert – we would like to invite everyone to join us at our Afterparty. After last year's success, it's definitely something we had to bring back this year. See you ;-)

Novo Cais: Em Nome de Gisberta ¦ Cph Jazz Festival ¦ Union
The Brazilian trio pays tribute to the phenomenon Gisberta Salce Júnior with a very special concert evening. Novo Cais Trio has performed at some of Copenhagen’s finest venues and has over time built an audience that comes specifically to experience authentic Brazilian music played with care and intelligence. This evening, Novo Cais will pay tribute to the phenomenon of Gisberta Salce Júnior. Gisberta Salce Júnior was a Brazilian trans woman who settled in Porto, Portugal – a performer, an artist, a woman who brought joy to those who knew her. Her story did not end as it should have: She died after a brutal hate crime in 2006. But her name did not disappear. It is remembered in songs, street names and in public memory. This concert celebrates not only the person Gisberta Salce Júnior, but also the dignity, resistance and love that her memory continues to evoke. This concert tribute weaves together the greatest LGBTQ+ songs from five decades of MPB — Música Popular Brasileira. The evening’s centerpiece is Pedro Abrunhosa’s “Balada de Gisberta” — the anthem against transphobia that has moved audiences across Brazil and Portugal. Around that song, Novo Cais builds a program that celebrates the extraordinary tradition of queer-affirming voices in Brazil as well as Portugal. Between songs, lead singer Daniel Boer Bonifacio — a Portuguese-Brazilian who is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community — will offer brief spoken reflections in English, connecting each piece to Gisberta’s story and the broader, living history of LGBTQ+ resistance in Brazil. This is a celebration of life — and of the power of music to carry us through it all. Line up Daniel Boer Bonifacio, vocalMartin Buono, guitarAlessandro Garau, trumpet and guitar Cph Jazz Festival 2026 in Union In Union, we invite you to enjoy a series of exciting eclectic concerts, which explore the borderlands of jazz. Maria Faust Sacrum Facere ‘Marches Rewound and Rewritten’
- Maria Faust voksede op i Sovjetunionen. Line up: Maria Faust – alto saxophoneFrancesco Bigoni – tenor saxophone, clarinetAnders Banke – bass clarinet, baritone hornKasper Tranberg – trumpetMads Hyhne – tromboneJonatan Ahlbom – tubaEmanuele Maniscalco – snare drumPeter Ole Jørgensen – bass drum, crotales, percussion - - - Maria Faust, Estonian-Danish saxophonist extraordinaire re-imagines music’s most militaristic form, the march, a form first and foremost associated with armies, manly valor; too often the form is propagandistic, commemorating victories or even even celebratory and festive, such as the familiar Radetzky March. We forget, however. that for the victims of war, those who hear the beat of the drum and marching feet in their own towns and countryside, the sound of an approaching army rarely augurs well. For civilians, the innocent victims of war, the sound of marching armies means death, destruction and, as we have seen in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the most horrific of crimes – torture, extrajudicial killings and mass rape. The tragedy of what the civilian faces in war is brought to the forefront in this record where the march, the customary musical accompaniment to war and armies, is hardly celebratory but covers a broad range of emotions – tragic, ominous, foreboding and mournful, to complement its more traditional role keeping marching soldiers in step. To this end, and appropriately for the march form, Faust’s compositions use far more percussive elements than we are used to with jazz records. Indeed, this record is above all a dialogue between a broad palette of emotions available to and expressed by Maria Faust’s magnificent playing, and the relentless, driving presence of the snare drum, ever reminding us that there is a war going on. For too many, war is something abstract, glorified and exalted, part of the culture’s DNA, a source of national pride, true of too many empires, past and present. Others, those whose history has largely avoided war, labor the abstraction of a naïve notion of “peace”, i.e.. that we wouldn’t have to bother thinking...

Dynamic (st)Ages. A concert about stages, places, and phases in a human life 8 July 2026 at 8:00 PM at Literaturhaus Lush vocal harmonies, four strong lead singers, and a top rhythm section. Dynamic, founded in 2013 by award‑winning singer and arranger Paul Kim from San Francisco, breathes new life into a rare genre on the Danish jazz scene.
