This concert explores more than two centuries of musical imagination, from the timeless elegance of Johann Sebastian Bach to the folk-inspired brilliance of Zoltán Kodály. Performed by three of Europe’s most distinguished chamber musicians – violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí, cellist Pau Codina, and violist Michel Camille – the programme combines Baroque mastery, Viennese lyricism, and the vibrant colours of Hungarian musical traditions. Spanish violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí has established himself as one of the leading chamber musicians of his generation, appearing regularly at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe. Cellist Pau Codina is celebrated for the depth and intensity of his musicianship and has performed extensively as both soloist and chamber musician. Together with violist Michel Camille, founder and artistic director of Fanø Festival, they bring decades of international experience to this intimate chamber music performance in Sønderho Church. The evening opens with Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, one of the most beloved works in the cello repertoire. Although written for a single instrument, the suite creates an astonishing richness of texture and expression. The radiant Prelude unfolds with a sense of optimism and grandeur, while the dance movements reveal Bach’s unparalleled ability to combine elegance, structure, and humanity. Nearly three centuries after their composition, the Cello Suites remain among the most influential works ever written for the instrument and continue to inspire musicians across the world. Schubert’s String Trio in B-flat major, D. 471provides a fascinating glimpse into the imagination of a young composer who would later transform the world of chamber music. Written when Schubert was still in his teens, the surviving Allegro already displays his gift for memorable melodies, subtle harmonic shifts, and natural instrumental dialogue. Although only a single movement survives, it stands as a remarkably complete and satisfying work in its own right. The second half of the concert is devoted to the music of Zoltán Kodály, one of Hungary’s most important composers, educators, and ethnomusicologists. Alongside his friend and colleague Béla Bartók, Kodály undertook pioneering journeys into the Hungarian countryside to collect and preserve thousands of folk songs. These discoveries became a central inspiration for his music and helped shape a new musical language that combined national traditions with sophisticated modern composition. Kodály’s Intermezzo for String Trio is a compact masterpiece, blending lyrical warmth, rhythmic vitality, and colourful instrumental writing. The work reflects the composer’s remarkable ability to create music that is both intellectually refined and immediately engaging. The concert concludes with Kodály’s monumental Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7, composed in 1914 and widely regarded as one of the greatest chamber works ever written for the two instruments. Rich in folk-inspired melodies and powerful emotional contrasts, the Duo pushes both performers to their technical and expressive limits. The work moves from dramatic intensity and profound introspection to a thrilling conclusion of extraordinary energy and brilliance. Set within the historic surroundings of Sønderho Church on Fanø, this concert offers a unique opportunity to experience world-class chamber music in one of Denmark’s most atmospheric venues. Combining Bach’s timeless craftsmanship, Schubert’s youthful genius, and Kodály’s vibrant musical imagination, the programme promises an evening of exceptional artistry and unforgettable musical storytelling.

1 tingMOZART, BACH & BEETHOVEN — TIMELESS MASTERPIECES AND REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS
MOZART, BACH & BEETHOVEN — TIMELESS MASTERPIECES AND REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS W.A. Mozart (1756–1791): Duo for Violin and Viola No. 1 in G major, K. 423I. AllegroII. AdagioIII. Rondo: Allegro J.S. Bach (1685–1750): Inventions (a selection) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827): String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3I. Allegro con spiritoII. Adagio con espressioneIII. Scherzo: Allegro molto e vivaceIV. Finale: Presto Pablo Hernán Benedí, violin · Pau Codina, cello · Michel Camille, viola MOZART, BACH & BEETHOVEN — TIMELESS MASTERPIECES AND REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS The fourth concert of Fanø Festival 2026 brings together three masterpieces that illuminate the extraordinary evolution of Western music. Performed by internationally acclaimed musicians Pablo Hernán Benedí, Pau Codina, and Michel Camille, the programme traces a path from Bach’s timeless craftsmanship through Mozart’s sublime elegance to Beethoven’s revolutionary vision and emotional power. The evening opens with Mozart’s Duo for Violin and Viola in G major, K. 423, one of the most perfect examples of chamber music ever written. Composed in 1783, the work transforms two instruments into an astonishingly rich musical conversation. The violin and viola meet as equals, exchanging melodies, ideas, and emotions with effortless grace. Beneath its elegance lies a profound humanity that continues to captivate audiences more than two centuries later. The Duo reveals Mozart at his most refined, creating music of remarkable beauty, balance, and warmth. A selection of Bach’s Inventions follows. Originally conceived as teaching pieces, these miniature masterpieces reveal the foundations upon which much of Western music was built. Their clarity, logic, and contrapuntal ingenuity profoundly influenced generations of composers, including both Mozart and Beethoven. Yet Bach’s music is far more than an academic exercise. Within these concise works lies an astonishing expressive world, demonstrating how a simple musical idea can unfold into something both intellectually rigorous and deeply moving. The Inventions stand at the beginning of a musical journey that would ultimately lead to the emotional and artistic revolutions of the nineteenth century. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3, one of the composer’s most powerful early chamber works. Written during a period of enormous political and social change in Europe, the music reflects a new spirit of individual expression and artistic freedom. Beethoven initially admired Napoleon Bonaparte as a symbol of liberty and the ideals of the Enlightenment, and although that admiration would later turn to disappointment, the revolutionary energy of the age remained central to his artistic outlook. The choice of C minor—a key associated with some of Beethoven’s most dramatic music, including the Pathétique Sonata and the Fifth Symphony—immediately signals a world far removed from the elegance of the eighteenth century. Here music becomes intensely personal, passionate, and urgent. The lyrical slow movement offers moments of profound introspection, while the scherzo and finale burst with energy, unpredictability, and emotional force. Many scholars regard the Op. 9 trios as the first chamber works in which Beethoven fully emerges from the shadows of Haydn and Mozart and begins speaking in his own unmistakable voice. Together these works chart a remarkable journey: from Bach’s architectural mastery, through Mozart’s sublime humanity, to Beethoven’s revolutionary belief that music could express the deepest emotions of the individual and speak directly to society itself. More than a concert of great masterpieces, this programme explores the ideas that helped shape the modern musical world. Set within the beautiful surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience chamber music at the highest level while following one of the most fascinating artistic journeys in European cultural history. This is music that continues to inspire, challenge, and move audiences today, just as it did when it first transformed the musical landscape of Europe. 1 tingBRAHMS, FAURÉ & ENESCU – A REMARKABLE JOURNEY FROM VIENNA TO PARIS
BRAHMS, FAURÉ & ENESCU – A REMARKABLE JOURNEY FROM VIENNA TO PARISFANØ FESTIVAL 2026 Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Sonata for Viola and Piano No. 1 in F minor, Op. 120 No. 1I. Allegro appassionatoII. Capriccio – Grazioso ed un poco vivace (C major) Valdemar Wenzel Most, piano · Michel Camille, viola BRAHMS, FAURÉ & ENESCU – A REMARKABLE JOURNEY FROM VIENNA TO PARISFANØ FESTIVAL 2026 This special DR Concert at Fanø Festival 2026explores one of the most fascinating artistic lineages in European music. Performed by the acclaimed young Danish pianist Valdemar Wenzel Most and violist Michel Camille, the programme reveals the musical connections linking Johannes Brahms, Gabriel Fauré, and George Enescu across generations, countries, and artistic traditions. At its centre stands George Enescu, one of the most remarkable musical prodigies of the twentieth century. As a child, Enescu left Romania to study in Vienna, where he encountered the musical world of Johannes Brahms at first hand. He later recalled hearing Brahms conduct and perform, experiences that left an enduring impression on the young composer. A few years later, Enescu moved to Paris, where he entered the Paris Conservatoire and studied composition with Gabriel Fauré, becoming one of the institution’s most gifted students. The result was a unique musical voice shaped by three worlds: the structural strength and emotional depth of Brahms, the elegance and refinement of French music, and the folk traditions of Enescu’s native Romania. The concert opens with Brahms’s Viola Sonata in F minor, Op. 120 No. 1, one of the crowning achievements of the viola repertoire. Originally written for the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld and later arranged by Brahms himself for viola, the sonata combines passionate intensity with lyrical warmth and profound introspection. Written at the end of the composer’s life, it reveals a master reflecting on a lifetime of artistic achievement. Enescu’s Concertstück for Viola and Pianoforms the centrepiece of the programme. Written in 1906, it combines dazzling virtuosity with rich lyricism and reveals the influence of both Brahms and Fauré. At the same time, its melodic turns and rhythmic freedom already point towards Enescu’s highly individual style. The work has become one of the most beloved concert pieces in the viola repertoire and offers a compelling portrait of a composer standing at the crossroads of Europe’s great musical traditions. The programme continues with Fauré’s Élégie, one of the most moving works of the French Romantic repertoire. Originally composed for cello and piano and later adapted for viola, the work unfolds with extraordinary elegance, tenderness, and emotional restraint. Fauré’s gift for melody and harmonic colour would profoundly influence generations of composers, including his young student Enescu. The concert concludes with a selection from Brahms’s Eight Piano Pieces, Op. 76. Written during a period of artistic maturity, these character pieces move effortlessly between intimacy and dramatic power. They reveal Brahms not as the monumental symphonist but as a master miniaturist capable of expressing an entire world of feeling within a few pages of music. Performed in the intimate surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, this concert offers a rare opportunity to follow a musical thread running from Vienna to Paris and beyond. More than a collection of masterpieces, it tells the story of artistic influence, mentorship, and inspiration across generations of composers whose music continues to shape the classical repertoire today. 1 tingNIELSEN’S TREASURES AND THE GENIUS OF BRAHMS AND KODÁLY
NIELSEN’S TREASURES AND THE GENIUS OF BRAHMS AND KODÁLY Ludolf Nielsen (1876–1939): String Quartet No. 1, Op. 1I. Allegro moderatoII. Andante espressivoIII. Scherzo: Allegro moltoIV. Finale: Allegro con fuoco Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967): Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12I. AllegramenteII. Lento, ma non troppoIII. Vivo Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano in E-flat major, Op. 40I. AndanteII. Scherzo: AllegroIII. Adagio mestoIV. Finale: Allegro con brio SINI SIMONEN, VIOLIN · JULIETTE ROOS, VIOLIN · MICHEL CAMILLE, VIOLA · PAU CODINA, CELLO · JOKE WIJMA, HORN · VALDEMAR WENZEL MOST, NIELSEN’S TREASURES AND THE GENIUS OF BRAHMS AND KODÁLY The twelfth concert of Fanø Festival 2026, Nielsen’s Treasures and the Genius of Brahms and Kodály, brings together an outstanding international ensemble of musicians drawn from some of Europe’s leading chamber music traditions. Violinists Sini Simonen and Juliette Roos, violist Michel Camille, cellist Pau Codina, horn player Joke Wijma, and pianist Valdemar Wenzel Most join forces in a programme that explores musical identity, tradition, and innovation across Danish, Hungarian, and German musical cultures. The evening opens with Ludolf Nielsen’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 1, a remarkable early work by a composer who was once regarded as one of Denmark’s greatest symphonic talents. During his lifetime, Nielsen was admired for the ambition and craftsmanship of his music, yet much of his output has remained unjustly neglected. His First String Quartet already reveals a composer of considerable imagination and confidence, combining Nordic lyricism with the rich harmonic language of late Romanticism. The work stands as a fascinating reminder of a period when Danish music sought its own voice alongside the great musical traditions of Germany and Central Europe. Few works illustrate the spirit of Nielsen’s Treasures and the Genius of Brahms and Kodály more clearly than this powerful and rarely heard quartet. The programme then turns to Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, one of the Hungarian composer’s most inventive chamber works. Written in 1919, shortly after the upheavals of the First World War, the Serenade combines folk-inspired vitality with sophisticated craftsmanship. Kodály’s lifelong fascination with Hungarian folk music profoundly shaped his musical language. Together with Béla Bartók, he travelled throughout rural Hungary collecting and preserving traditional songs, discoveries that transformed the course of twentieth-century music. In the Serenade, echoes of folk melodies and dance rhythms are woven into a highly individual and expressive musical tapestry. At the heart of Nielsen’s Treasures and the Genius of Brahms and Kodály lies this celebration of national identity transformed into music of universal appeal. The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms’s Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40, one of the composer’s most personal and beloved chamber works. Written in 1865 following the death of his mother, the trio balances moments of deep reflection with passages of radiant warmth and joy. Rather than using the modern valved horn, Brahms originally conceived the work for the natural horn, whose distinctive colour evoked memories of the countryside, distant hunting calls, and the sounds of his youth. The Horn Trio occupies a unique place within Brahms’s chamber music. The unusual combination of violin, horn, and piano creates a sound world unlike any other in the repertoire. Throughout the work, expansive lyrical melodies alternate with passages of intimacy and tenderness. The slow movement, often regarded as one of Brahms’s most moving tributes to his mother, is followed by a spirited finale that transforms grief into affirmation and celebration. At the centre of this concert is the idea of musical heritage. Ludolf Nielsen sought to create a distinctly Danish voice within the European tradition. Kodály drew inspiration from the folk music of Hungary while forging a modern musical language. Brahms, deeply rooted in the German Romantic tradition, transformed personal experience into music of universal emotional power. Together, these works reveal how composers across Europe drew upon local traditions, memories, and cultural identity to create music that continues to resonate far beyond national borders. Presented in the beautiful surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, Nielsen’s Treasures and the Genius of Brahms and Kodály offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience a gathering of internationally acclaimed artists in a programme rich in colour, character, and emotional depth. From Danish Romanticism and Hungarian folk-inspired vitality to the timeless humanity of Brahms, the evening promises an unforgettable journey through some of the most compelling chamber music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 1 tingNielsen's Nordic Passion Kodály's Hungarian Fire
NIELSEN’S NORDIC PASSION KODÁLY’S HUNGARIAN FIRE Ludolf Nielsen (1876–1939): String Quartet No. 1, Op. 1I. Allegro moderatoII. Andante espressivoIII. Scherzo: Allegro moltoIV. Finale: Allegro con fuoco Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967): Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12I. AllegramenteII. Lento, ma non troppoIII. Vivo Ludolf Nielsen (1876–1939): String Quartet No. 2, Op. 5I. Allegro moderatoII. AndanteIII. Scherzo: Allegro moltoIV. Finale: Allegro con fuoco SINI SIMONEN, VIOLIN · JULIETTE ROOS, VIOLIN · MICHEL CAMILLE, VIOLA · PAU CODINA, CELLO The sixteenth concert of Klassisk Sommer Festival 2026, Nielsen’s Nordic Passion Kodály’s Hungarian Fire, brings together four outstanding chamber musicians in a programme devoted to two composers whose music is deeply rooted in national traditions while speaking with a universal voice. The concert explores the rich musical worlds of Denmark and Hungary through works filled with lyricism, drama, virtuosity, and emotional depth. At the heart of the programme stand two string quartets by Ludolf Nielsen, a composer who was once regarded as one of Denmark’s most significant symphonic talents. During his lifetime, Nielsen enjoyed considerable recognition for the ambition, craftsmanship, and emotional power of his music. Yet much of his output has remained unjustly neglected, making his chamber works particularly fascinating discoveries for modern audiences. The concert opens with String Quartet No. 1, Op. 1, a remarkable early work that already reveals Nielsen’s gift for combining Nordic lyricism with the structural confidence and expressive richness of the late Romantic tradition. Broad melodic lines, dramatic contrasts, and an instinctive understanding of string writing create a work of considerable individuality and emotional appeal. The music vividly demonstrates the qualities celebrated in Nielsen’s Nordic Passion Kodály’s Hungarian Fire: emotional honesty, national character, and powerful musical storytelling. Between the two quartets stands Kodály’s Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, one of the Hungarian composer’s most distinctive chamber works. Written in 1919, the Serenade reflects Kodály’s lifelong fascination with the folk music of his native Hungary. Together with Béla Bartók, Kodály travelled extensively through rural regions collecting and preserving traditional songs and dances. These experiences profoundly shaped his musical language and helped create a new national style that would influence generations of composers. At the centre of Nielsen’s Nordic Passion Kodály’s Hungarian Fire lies a fascinating dialogue between two musical cultures. Nielsen’s quartets reflect the lyricism and emotional breadth of Scandinavian Romanticism, while Kodály’s Serenade draws upon the rhythms, melodies, and colours of Hungarian folk traditions. The Serenade combines folk-inspired vitality with sophisticated chamber music craftsmanship, creating a distinctive sound world rich in colour, character, and virtuosity. The second half of the concert returns to Ludolf Nielsen with his String Quartet No. 2, Op. 5, a work that demonstrates the remarkable development of his compositional voice. More ambitious in scale and richer in harmonic language, the quartet reveals a composer increasingly confident in shaping large musical structures. Throughout the work, moments of powerful drama are balanced by passages of warmth, lyricism, and introspection. Together, Nielsen’s two quartets provide a rare opportunity to encounter a composer who played an important role in Danish musical life during a period of profound cultural change. Heard alongside Kodály’s Serenade, they reveal fascinating parallels between composers seeking to draw inspiration from national traditions while engaging with the broader currents of European music. Presented in the intimate surroundings of Hjerting Church, Nielsen’s Nordic Passion Kodály’s Hungarian Fire offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience two rich and contrasting musical worlds brought vividly to life by an outstanding international ensemble. Through Nielsen’s Nordic Passion Kodály’s Hungarian Fire, listeners are invited to discover music of striking individuality, ranging from Nordic lyricism and Romantic grandeur to Hungarian vitality, virtuosity, and expressive warmth. From the vibrant rhythms of Latin America to the dazzling possibilities of the classical guitar and the shimmering soundscapes of French Impressionism, the programme offers a journey through some of the most distinctive musical voices of the twentieth century. The concert opens with Paquito D’Rivera’s Aires Tropicales, one of the most popular works in the wind quintet repertoire. Born in Cuba and celebrated internationally as a virtuoso clarinettist, saxophonist, and composer, D’Rivera combines classical craftsmanship with the infectious rhythms and energy of Latin American music. The seven movements – from the exuberant Alborada and lyrical Habanera to the jazz-infused brilliance of Dizzyness, the powerful Afro, and the playful Contradanza – create a vivid musical panorama of Latin American cultures and traditions. Each movement presents a distinct character while showcasing the virtuosity and individuality of every member of the wind quintet. At the heart of Latin Fire Guitar Virtuosity French Impressionism stands Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Capriccio Diabolico, one of the most celebrated works ever written for solo guitar. Composed in homage to Niccolò Paganini, the legendary violin virtuoso whose technical brilliance astonished nineteenth-century audiences, the work pushes the guitar to its expressive and technical limits. Rapid passagework, dramatic contrasts, lyrical episodes, and dazzling displays of virtuosity combine to create a work of theatrical flair and irresistible energy. The performance is given by Jonas Egholm, one of Denmark’s leading classical guitarists. Widely admired for the refinement of his playing and the breadth of his musical imagination, Egholm brings both technical mastery and expressive depth to this demanding masterpiece. Through Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s vivid writing, audiences encounter the guitar not only as an intimate instrument but also as a vehicle for dramatic storytelling and virtuosic display. The second half of the programme is devoted to Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, one of the crowning achievements of French chamber music. Written when the composer was still in his twenties, the quartet already displays the qualities that would make Ravel one of the most distinctive musical voices of the twentieth century. Rich harmonic colours, subtle textures, rhythmic sophistication, and extraordinary craftsmanship combine to create a work of remarkable originality and beauty. Although Ravel admired the music of Debussy, his quartet speaks with an unmistakably personal voice. The opening movement unfolds with elegance and warmth, while the energetic scherzo introduces exotic colours and rhythmic vitality. The slow movement creates an atmosphere of profound stillness and introspection before the exhilarating finale brings the work to a brilliant conclusion. At the centre of Latin Fire Guitar Virtuosity French Impressionism lies a celebration of colour itself. D’Rivera paints with rhythm and dance, Castelnuovo-Tedesco explores the expressive possibilities of the guitar, and Ravel transforms the string quartet into an instrument of almost orchestral richness. Despite their different cultural backgrounds, all three composers share a fascination with timbre, atmosphere, and musical imagination. Presented in the beautiful surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, Latin Fire Guitar Virtuosity French Impressionism offers audiences an evening of extraordinary contrasts and discoveries. From Cuban-inspired rhythms and guitar fireworks to the shimmering elegance of French Impressionism, the concert showcases the remarkable diversity of chamber music and the artistry of an outstanding international ensemble. Through music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Luigi Boccherini, and Robert Schumann, the programme explores beauty, dance, passion, and the powerful emotional contrasts that lie at the heart of great chamber music. The evening opens with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Ecloghe, Op. 206, a work of exquisite refinement for flute, English horn, and guitar. One of the twentieth century’s most important composers for the guitar, Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote extensively for Andrés Segovia and helped establish the instrument’s modern repertoire. Inspired by pastoral poetry and Mediterranean landscapes, the Ecloghe evoke a world of warmth, sunlight, and contemplation. The combination of flute, English horn, and guitar creates a distinctive palette of sounds, rich in atmosphere and colour. The four movements unfold like musical paintings, capturing fleeting moods and impressions rather than dramatic narratives. Throughout the work, Castelnuovo-Tedesco demonstrates an extraordinary gift for melody and instrumental colour. It is from these vivid soundscapes that the title Colours Fandango and Torment first draws its inspiration. At the centre of the programme stands Luigi Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet in D major, “Fandango”, one of the most celebrated works associated with Spain. Although born in Italy, Boccherini spent much of his life in Spain and absorbed the rhythms and character of Spanish musical traditions. The famous final movement, the Fandango, has become one of the most recognisable and beloved dances in chamber music. Throughout the quintet, elegance and charm are combined with irresistible rhythmic vitality. The music culminates in the exhilarating Fandango itself, where castanet-like rhythms, vibrant energy, and theatrical flair create an atmosphere of celebration and joy. At the heart of Colours, Fandango and Torment lies this vivid contrast between Mediterranean lyricism and the infectious spirit of Spanish dance. The second half of the concert turns to Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 63, one of the masterpieces of the Romantic repertoire. Composed in 1847 during one of the most productive periods of his life, the trio combines lyrical beauty with restless energy and emotional intensity. Schumann considered chamber music one of the highest forms of artistic expression, and in this work he created a masterpiece of remarkable passion and imagination. The opening movement immediately establishes a mood of urgency and longing, while the scherzo reveals Schumann’s characteristic fantasy and rhythmic vitality. The slow movement offers moments of profound tenderness and introspection, before the fiery finale drives the work to its dramatic conclusion. Although written during a period of great creativity, the music also reveals the emotional intensity that would increasingly characterise Schumann’s later years. The sense of yearning, vulnerability, and inner struggle gives particular meaning to the final element of Colours, Fandango and Torment. Presented in the beautiful surroundings of Nordby Church on Fanø, Colours Fandango and Torment offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience three highly contrasting yet deeply complementary musical worlds. From Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Mediterranean colours and Boccherini’s unforgettable Fandango to the emotional depth of Schumann’s Romantic masterpiece, the programme celebrates music’s ability to transport, inspire, and move us. For lovers of chamber music, Colours Fandango and Torment promises an evening of exceptional artistry, powerful emotions, and unforgettable musical storytelling at the heart of Fanø Festival 2026. Allegro con spirito (Tempo di Saltarello)III. Lento – ElegiacoIV. Allegretto vivace con spirito Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968): Capriccio Diabolico, Op. 85 for Solo Guitar Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Piano Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 26I. Allegro non troppoII. Poco adagioIII. Scherzo: Poco allegroIV. Allegro KERSTIN THEILE, FLUTE · DAVID DANIEL DINU,ENGLISH HORN · JONAS EGHOLM, GUITAR · JULIETTE ROOS, VIOLIN· VALDEMAR WENZEL MOST, PIANO ·JOEL BARDOLET, VIOLIN · MICHEL CAMILLE, VIOLA · PAU CODINA, CELLO Recorded by Danish National Radio (DR) The penultimate concert of EICMF 2026 (Esbjerg International Chamber Music Festival)brings together Mediterranean warmth, dazzling virtuosity, and one of the great masterpieces of the Romantic chamber music repertoire. In a programme that moves from the poetic landscapes of Italy to the sweeping emotional horizons of Brahms, audiences will encounter music rich in colour, imagination, and expressive power. The evening opens with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Ecloghe, Op. 206, a captivating work inspired by the pastoral poetry and landscapes of the Mediterranean. Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the twentieth century’s most important composers for the guitar and a close collaborator of the legendary Andrés Segovia. Throughout his career he created music distinguished by lyrical beauty, literary inspiration, and a remarkable gift for instrumental colour. The four movements of Ecloghe unfold like a sequence of musical paintings. The gentle Andantino quieto introduces a world of serenity and warm Mediterranean light. The lively Allegro con spirito (Tempo di Saltarello) evokes the energy of an Italian folk dance, while the expressive Lento – Elegiaco reveals the composer’s gift for melodic melancholy and introspection. The joyful Allegretto vivace con spirito concludes the work with dance-like vitality and elegance. The unusual combination of flute, English horn, and guitar creates a uniquely intimate sound world in which each instrument contributes its own distinctive colour and character. At the heart of Mediterranean Fire, Guitar Virtuosity and Brahmsian Grandeur stands Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s celebrated Capriccio Diabolico, one of the most brilliant works ever written for solo guitar. Composed as a tribute to Niccolò Paganini, the legendary violin virtuoso whose astonishing technique inspired fascination throughout nineteenth-century Europe, the work pushes the guitar to its technical and expressive limits. Rapid scales, dazzling passagework, lyrical episodes, and dramatic contrasts combine to create a work of extraordinary theatrical flair. The music captures something of Paganini’s mythical aura while simultaneously showcasing the remarkable possibilities of the modern classical guitar. The performance is given by Jonas Egholm, internationally recognised as one of the leading guitarists of his generation. His technical mastery and musical imagination make him an ideal interpreter of this virtuosic masterpiece. The second half of the concert is devoted to Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 26, one of the composer’s most expansive and life-affirming chamber works. Written during Brahms’s early maturity, the quartet combines intimate chamber music dialogue with a scale and richness that often approach the symphonic. The opening Allegro non troppo unfolds with remarkable freedom and generosity, revealing Brahms’s gift for long, singing melodies and masterful thematic development. The serene Poco adagio forms the emotional heart of the work, offering music of profound tenderness and lyrical beauty. A powerful Scherzo introduces rhythmic drive and dramatic contrast before the exhilarating finale brings the quartet to a triumphant and joyful conclusion. Among Brahms’s chamber works, the A major Piano Quartet occupies a unique position. While many of his compositions explore darker emotional landscapes, this quartet radiates warmth, optimism, and confidence. The music celebrates the expressive possibilities of chamber music through its abundance of melody, rhythmic vitality, and richly woven instrumental textures. At the centre of this programme lies a fascinating meeting of two very different musical worlds. Castelnuovo-Tedesco paints with colour, atmosphere, and Mediterranean light. Brahms creates vast musical architectures of extraordinary emotional depth and humanity. Yet both composers share a devotion to craftsmanship, melody, and expressive sincerity. Together, their works reveal the extraordinary breadth and richness of the European chamber music tradition. The concert also brings together an exceptional international ensemble of musicians representing some of Europe’s leading chamber music traditions. Their collaboration reflects the spirit of EICMF, which for...

Fandango, Fire and Schumann’s Glory unites Latin American rhythms, Spanish dance, and German Romantic passion in a programme overflowing with colour, virtuosity, and emotional intensity. Spanning more than two centuries and three musical cultures, the concert celebrates chamber music’s remarkable ability to entertain, inspire, and move audiences. The evening opens with Paquito D’Rivera’s Aires Tropicales, one of the most popular works in the modern wind quintet repertoire. Born in Cuba and celebrated worldwide as a virtuoso clarinettist, saxophonist, and composer, D’Rivera combines classical craftsmanship with the irresistible rhythms and melodies of Latin America. The seven movements of Aires Tropicales form a vibrant musical journey. From the exuberant Alborada and Cuban-inspired Son to the lyrical Habanera, elegant Vals Venezolano, jazz-infused Dizzyness, powerful Afro, and playful Contradanza, each movement presents a distinct musical personality. The work is full of humour, charm, and rhythmic vitality while offering every member of the wind quintet opportunities to shine. At the heart of Fandango, Fire and Schumann’s Glory stands one of the most famous dances in all chamber music: Luigi Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet in D major, “Fandango”. Although Boccherini was born in Italy, his long association with Spain profoundly influenced his musical language. The quintet is a masterpiece of elegance and theatrical flair, culminating in the exhilarating Fandango, whose infectious rhythms and irresistible energy have captivated audiences for generations. The guitar plays a central role throughout the work, bringing warmth, colour, and authenticity to Boccherini’s evocation of Spanish musical life. The famous final dance movement seems almost impossible to resist, its rhythmic momentum building towards a dazzling conclusion. It is this spirit of celebration that gives the title Fandango, Fire and Schumann’s Glory its first inspiration. The second half of the concert is devoted to Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 63, one of the crowning achievements of the Romantic chamber music repertoire. Composed in 1847 during one of the most productive periods of Schumann’s life, the trio combines lyrical beauty, emotional intensity, and extraordinary imagination. It is music of profound humanity, filled with longing, tenderness, and passionate energy. The opening movement immediately establishes a mood of urgency and dramatic purpose. The scherzo displays Schumann’s unique blend of fantasy and rhythmic vitality, while the slow movement unfolds with remarkable intimacy and expressive depth. The finale, marked Mit Feuer (“With Fire”), drives the work towards a thrilling conclusion of irresistible momentum and emotional power. At the centre of Fandango, Fire and Schumann’s Glory lies a journey from dance to transcendence. D’Rivera’s colourful Latin American rhythms and Boccherini’s vibrant Spanish dances gradually lead listeners towards the deeply personal and emotionally charged world of Schumann. The result is a programme that moves from celebration and movement to artistic depth and spiritual intensity. The title’s final word, Glory, is particularly fitting. Schumann’s First Piano Trio stands among the supreme achievements of Romantic chamber music. It combines technical mastery with emotional honesty and demonstrates the composer’s extraordinary ability to transform personal feeling into music of universal significance. The work brings the festival to a conclusion not merely with brilliance, but with genuine artistic greatness. This final concert also reflects the international spirit that has defined EICMF for more than a quarter of a century. Outstanding musicians from across Europe come together to explore masterpieces from different cultures and traditions, creating musical encounters that transcend national boundaries. Presented at the Syddansk Musikkonservatorium (SDMK), Fandango, Fire and Schumann’s Glory provides a fitting conclusion to EICMF 2026. From the tropical colours of D’Rivera and the irresistible rhythms of Boccherini’s Fandango to the emotional grandeur of Schumann’s...
